Temple Beth Sholom (TBS) is a welcoming and inclusive sacred community that connects its members to one another, Judaism, and Israel through interactive spiritual, educational, and social experiences. TBS is a Conservative synagogue consisting of more than 800 families. In addition to its clergy and staff, TBS has many groups and committees that immerse congregants of all ages in Jewish life and learning.
We are seeking a full-time Director of Development for direct hire.

The Director of Development’s primary focus is to create and implement strategies that build relationships with internal and external constituencies, including TBS members, board members, staff, donor and membership prospects, corporate sponsors, foundations and community representatives.

The Director of Development’s goals focus around the following priority areas:

• To engage and steward our internal donor constituencies in meaningful and impactful ways
• To establish procedural processes within development operations
• To outreach to external constituencies in order to build TBS’s donor base

Position Summary:

  1. The Director of Development (DOD) will lead Temple Beth Sholom’s development effort by building a complete fundraising program and strengthening the philanthropic profile of the Temple.

  2. Reporting to TBS’s Executive Director, the DOD will collaborate regularly with the President, Senior Rabbi, Treasurer and Vice President of Development for support, coordination and marketing needed in the growth of the development program. This includes strategizing and planning to determine the most appropriate donor cultivation opportunities, donor prospects, and priorities for development activities and events.

  3. The DOD will be a professional with the ability to:

• Establish development strategy, including annual giving, planned giving, plus giving, High Holy Day appeal, events, online giving and donor stewardship.

• Work collaboratively with the clergy, senior staff and TBS’s lay leadership to assist with the solicitation of donations.

Duties and responsibilities:

  1. Work with the Development Committee of the Board, prepare and implement a comprehensive, integrated advancement/development program with short term and long-term deliverables.

  2. Develop, promote, coordinate, and manage fundraising activities, which may include: Donor Direct Funding, Annual Gifts, Plus Giving, Planned Giving, Sponsorship program, grants and potential Capital Campaign.

  3. Participate in the development and implementation of lay leadership training in the area of funds development and cultivate lay leadership in asking and giving activities.

  4. Develop and implement a donor stewardship program for TBS leadership to implement.

  5. Work with Vice President of Development on fundraising events and programs, together with lay leader event chairpersons and committees.

  6. Report regularly to the Board on the status of all funding programs.

  7. Oversee the organization and maintenance of a donor database and development records, including revising and maintaining mailing lists and monitoring income and expenses of the development program.

  8. Develop and oversee a master calendar of all Temple Beth Sholom’s fundraising activities.

  9. Prepare and administer a Development budget in conjunction with Officers and Committee Chair.

  10. Offer guidance and support to Plus Givers and Sponsorship committee to create opportunities for stewardship, special programs, and acknowledgement

  11. Evaluate our Plus Giving and Sponsorship programs, along with committees, to adjust pricing levels and benefits as needed based on outcome

  12. Assist in conversations about gifts to the synagogue, either in dedication, or helping to direct different ways to give meaningfully to TBS

  13. Planning and implementation of largescale synagogue events, overseeing event co-chairs and committees, and working closely with Special Events Chair

  14. Managing RSVPs for larger synagogue events, working with our database administrator to ensure all are within the ShulCloud system (including comps, staff, guests of honor, etc)

  15. Working with vendors for events throughout the planning and day of (catering, AV, rentals, décor)

  16. Creating communications for pre-event logistics to attendees and serving as person of contact

The Candidate:

We seek a sophisticated, entrepreneurial, seasoned development professional who is able to lead and manage a new phase of Temple Beth Sholom’s philanthropic growth. Poised and resourceful, he/she will be a savvy relationship builder, strategic thinker and a “go-getter”.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• College degree required; post -graduate work a plus and a minimum of 5 years fundraising and development operations experience.
• Successful track record of cultivating and soliciting major gifts from individual and institutional donors
• Demonstrated marketing and special events experience is desirable
• A history of meeting and exceeding budgeted goal.
• Experience building a successful development program
• Experience working with and training volunteers.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

• Ability to engage and motivate TBS members.
• Demonstrated marketing savvy and the entrepreneurial ability to recognize and respond quickly to new opportunities.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Knowledge of, and experience with, effective fundraising strategies.
